EMDR, known as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured therapy that helps your brain reprocess difficult memories and negative beliefs attached to them.

During an EMDR session, you will briefly focus on the difficult memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping). By bringing together the memory and bilateral stimulation, the brain is able to process the memory rapidly and effectively, which results in reduced intensity and emotional charge behind the memory.

The end result is that you will not only feel lasting relief from difficult symptoms and negative beliefs, you will also gain a deeper understanding of what’s been going on underneath the surface. The relief and understanding you walk away with makes future challenging situations more manageable.
Clients report feeling lighter or like a weight has been lifted off of them in as little as three sessions.

What does EMDR Therapy look like?
The lasting relief that clients feel following EMDR is a result of the eight-phase, three-pronged approach that allows the brain to process memories, emotions, and sensations that are keeping it “stuck” in a maladaptive loop, which then allows for the brain to resume adaptive processing and integration.

Phase 1 - History and Treatment Planning
We’ll discuss the specific problem bringing you to therapy and the behaviors and problems stemming from it. Using this information, we’ll develop a treatment plan.Phase 2 - Preparation
This is the skill building phase where we’ll develop techniques and skills that can support you in quickly diffusing any emotional disturbance that may come up while we are working together.Phase 3 - Assessment
During this phase, we’ll identify the specific memories that we will process, as well as the negative self-beliefs, emotions, and sensations that are associated with the memory. We’ll also identify the positive self-statement that we would rather believe about ourselves.Phase 4 - Desensitization
This is where the magic starts! We’ll utilize brief moments of bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements or tapping to desensitize, or take the power out of, the memory that we are targeting. Throughout this phase we will check-in and notice what other thoughts, memories, or sensations come up, while keeping a pulse on your level of distress and maintaining it at a therapeutic level.Phase 5 - Installation
Enter part 2 of the magic! During this phase, we’ll focus on and strengthen, or install, the positive self-statement which will replace the original negative belief.Phase 6 - Body Scan
After the positive self-statement has been installed, we’ll notice any lingering body tensions or sensations related to the original memory. If there are, we’ll then target those sensations for reprocessing.Phase 7 - Closure
Every session will have a closure phase, where we’ll revisit the skills established during Phase 2 to make sure you leave the session feeling better than when you began.Phase 8 - Reevaluation
Every new session will begin with a reevaluation of how you are feeling in between sessions to understand if there are changes we need to make in your treatment plan, or if treatment has been successful. -
Process past memories

Plan for future actions that you can take when similar emotions or sensations are brought up again

EMDR works best for individuals who are ready and motivated to move on from their past experiences. This means that individuals who are experiencing ongoing trauma would benefit from EMDR once they are out of the traumatic situation. Additionally, individuals whose symptoms are related to an inherited or biological condition may not experience the relief they are seeking from EMDR.

It can be. Thinking about and focusing on distressing life experiences can be really difficult. The emotions associated with the memories that we will process can sometimes be intense and bring up unexpected feelings.
Throughout our sessions, I will be attuned to your mental and emotional state, and guide you to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Absolutely not! EMDR is unique in that you don’t have to share all the difficult details, but you do have to think about them. Since most of the work is done within your brain, you don’t have to verbally go into detail about what you experienced.
